Echoes & Edges: Indigenous & Colonial Architectures

In this art and history class, we will learn about indigenous cultures and colonization through the study of their architecture. How did colonization transform architecture? What can buildings tell us about the stories of colonialism? What can we learn from indigenous architecture and how can this inform our choices for sustainable living in the future? You will get a chance to design your own building!

Introduction

Calling all designers and future architects! You will be an architect for six weeks, designing your own building based on our discussions and research on sustainable living. Throughout this class, we will be exploring the effects of colonization on architecture and how different these landmarks are compared to indigenous structures. We will consider what indigenous cultures can teach us about sustainability and protecting the environment: from low-impact burning to sustainable materials. You will be creating a 3D digital rendering of your building, hearing from real life architects and designing a physical model to present to the class.
