Introduction
Take a journey into the past and discover the birth of radio in the United States—a revolutionary tale that reshaped communication and culture. From its humble beginnings in the early 20th century to its golden age, you will explore how radio united a nation, as well as how it impacted the identity of America. For the first time, families and communities gathered around the radio, hearing the announcement of the Fight of the Century with boxer Joe Louis, the Hindenburg Disaster, or FDR’s first fireside chat. Each week, we'll explore a new era of radio. Students will analyze how radio shaped American life, influenced politics, and revolutionized the music industry. Students will create their own radio shows in groups, using sound editing software to produce segments that echo historical broadcasts. We'll also dive into the role of radio in times of national crisis, examining how it informed and united the public. Finally, we will create a permanent Sora radio station with those who want to be involved!
