Periodic Table of Pollution
Explore the connection between the knowledge the periodic table offers and pollution. On this expedition you'll learn the basics of atomic structure and chemical bonding which help explain how different elements affect the environment and human life.
Introduction
In June 2023, New York City faced its worst air pollution on record, while oceans, laden with plastic, saw species adapt to life on floating plastic islands. These are stark reminders of the environmental impact of human activities such as agriculture, industrial processes, and mining, which release harmful chemicals into our environment.
In this expedition, students will dive into pollution using the periodic table as a guide. They will select elements, molecules, and pollutants that interest them to create a "Periodic Table of Pollution." This collaborative project aims to educate the public on the causes, effects, and solutions to global pollution. It also seeks to encourage environmental advocacy and foster appreciation for sustainable practices, empowering participants to act as stewards of the planet.
