How to Calculate GPA the Sora Way

At Sora Schools, we do things a bit differently with our grades. Instead of the usual GPA system, we use something called a mastery-GPA model. This means we look at how well a student understands the content (mastery) and their skills (ability scores) and weigh them equally when we calculate a GPA. 

As a student navigates their high school journey, we know they will improve in the units we cover and the skills we teach. So, we've designed our GPA calculation to give a little extra help to newer students, recognizing that growth happens over time.

However, the GPA is not the only thing that matters. Obsessing over a GPA isn't helpful for students or their families. We want students to learn in their own way and be interested in what they’re learning. A GPA does not show the whole picture of a student’s growth or personal development.
