Themes & Abilities for Middle School

By Sora Schools

Middle School Themes

Academic Requirements

Each Cycle's curated list of Expeditions includes targeted units and abilities around a common theme, such as Identity, Citizenship, and Exploration.

  • Students will get the opportunity to explore new interests and receive a clear, comprehensive educational experience.
  • Sora's team curates expeditions to ensure that students complete all middle school annual requirements.
  • Families don't need to track academic unit coverage and progress as part of the student journey - this is taken care of for you!

Choosing Expeditions

  • Middle school students can choose from theme-based STEM and Humanities Expeditions each Cycle, crafted to spark curiosity and deepen understanding.
  • Advisors work closely with students to help design a schedule that aligns with their personal interests and educational goals.
  • Students build their schedule by adding one STEM and one Humanities expedition to their request list each cycle. Students are also welcome to add more than 1 STEM and 1 Humanities expedition to their request list.
  • Math expedition scheduling is consistent throughout the year.
  • Students have voice and choice in how they demonstrate their understanding within an Expedition through projects

Middle School Abilities

Along with cycle themes, we will have spotlight abilities as well.

  • Spotlight abilities will be the ability that is focused in all experiences across the cycle.
  • For example, the spotlight ability for Cycle 1 is Project Management. Students can expect to work on all aspects of Project Management within all of their expeditions in Cycle 1.
  • Experts may choose to add additional abilities to their expeditions where they see fit.

Students engage with these abilities throughout their journey in Sora's middle school. Expeditions are designed with these abilities in mind, while including core content areas.

Here are Sora's middle school abilities:

  • Speaking and Listening
  • Reading
  • Investigating
  • Designing Solutions
  • Project Management
  • Writing
  • Quantitative Reasoning
